The Science City of Ahmedabad has always been very popular among the people of the state. They have been the destination of a hundred and eighty-eight species belonging to different varieties. To take the attraction further higher, recently there has been an addition of three lemon sharks which measure six feet.
These sharks have a yellowish-green color by which they are identified. It is also been said that these species of sharks are not a big threat to humans. After ensuring every factor they have been brought to the Science City. The authorities are of the view that this shall draw more marine life enthusiasts and visitors in large numbers over the coming days. These lemon sharks were brought on Monday and now are open to visitors for a view.
These sharks are called lemon sharks because of the yellowish texture of their bodies. Their scientific name is Negaprion brevirostris. They belong to the species in the shark family which is called Carcharhinidae. Across the tropical regions of the western Atlantic Ocean, you can find the habitat of these sharks. You will also find them in Southern Brazil, New Jersey, across the eastern Pacific Ocean, Ecuador, southern parts of Baja California, and also in Cape Verde across the Sal Island.
These shark species generally occupy the shallow waters of the subtropic region in coral reefs, enclosed bays, mangroves, and also across the different river mouths too. Even though these sharks do swim through up rivers but, they hardly get much far across the freshwater.
During migrations, you will find them in open water and they tend to live across the insular and continental shelves for a major part of their lives. More to that, these sharks are also known for coming back to particular nursery sites during the time of breeding.
The yellowish-green color on their bodies is the specific characteristic of their identity that sets these sharks apart from the other species. Their length even grows to eleven feet. And by the time they become an adult, they already weigh ninety kilograms. The yellowish skin tone of these sharks works to their advantage. It camouflages them while swimming across the sandy seafloor within the coastal habitat.
They feed mostly during the night. There are electroreceptors in these sharks that help them to detect fish. Usually, sharks are very aggressive in nature. But, this specific species is very calm in comparison to that. They are not seen as big threats to humans. Till now there have been ten instances when they have bitten humans that too without much damage.
In fact, on the contrary, these sharks are considered as most vulnerable. The total lifespan of a lemon shark is unknown it is believed that on average they live between twenty-five to thirty years. Other that the lemon sharks this gallery has a collection of other hundred and eighty-eight aquatic animals, eleven thousand six hundred fishes, and African penguins as well. The main attraction of this more than fifteen thousand square meter gallery is that it has a twenty-eight-meter aquatic tunnel that resembles the ocean bed.
